Helsinki Day 3: Kallio Flea Market

Day 3! Remember the comic about the day the bunny came home? The bunny teapot artist Jan's work is available at Saila's wonderful porcelain-and-ice-cream stand in front of the shop Made in Kallio in Kallio, Helsinki. Definitely worth a visit!

Helsinki: First Impressions

Moi! We've finally got Internet connection at our place in Helsinki so here are some scribbles from my first impressions of the city yesterday. Hello from the sunny and beautiful design (and Moomin!) capital of the world! (I'm seriously going nuts from the adorableness and have to stop myself from buying everything. So Japanese, I know!)

G was really opposed to my publishing this comic...but I did it anyway. Sorry G!

If you think about it, "significant other" is also a really strange concept . . .

I know, this is totally German Pronunciation 101, but it still catches me off guard sometimes . . .

The Moomins are the characters in an awesome series of comics written/illustrated by Finnish artist Tove Jansson. At some point in the 80s (I think), a Japanese company made an animated series based on the Moomins, which led to their explosive popularity in random! I also wrote a bit about them in this entry from nearly 3 years ago.

Keep talking

Uwe's on holiday for the first time in something like 2 years, so we get to see more of him these days. Yay!

Early-morning purchase

I actually really appreciate that G does stuff like this . . . even at 8:30 in the morning. It would take me forever to get off my lazy butt and take care of stuff like this . . .

The neighborhood we live in is significantly more, um, say, casual than the city centre.

Denglisch 101, part 3

This is kind of a new one I caught myself doing recently . . . pretty awful, I know.

For Free

If anyone wants, there's still a free houseplant available on the sidewalk in front of our house. :P

One of the many pointless discussions G and I occasionally have. G and my definition of "exciting" are not exactly the same . . .

Rip van Winkle

Next month, I'll be going back to Japan for the first time since I moved to Berlin---3 years ago. I'm so out of touch with Japanese news and pop culture and politics and trends when I'm abroad that I always feel super-disoriented when I go back...kind of like a bear just coming out of hibernation. I'm already excited about all the reverse-culture-shock comics I'll be able to draw!

Don't know Rip van Winkle? It's basically about a man who falls asleep and wakes up decades into the future. There's also a similar (but even trippier) Japanese fairy tale called Urashima Taro. Anyone know any other variations?
