Ice Cubes

I usually never bother to order water in Berlin because (a) beer is cheaper and (b) a lot of places don't like serving tap water and will sometimes charge for it or even refuse to give it to you. I guess part of it is because water in Berlin is expensive, but it's the one annoying thing about the city that I've kind of gotten used to. So yes, I was impressed when this happened when S and I went for lunch...:

There were even two ice cubes in the water! Two! (Ok, so I must sound kind of ridiculous...ha!)

    I generally tip anyway, but no, it's not mandatory unlike elsewhere. I think my mom got chased down the street once by a waiter in the states when she forgot to tip. D'oh.

    M: I know, eh? We had to laugh at ourselves because we were both so surprised and impressed. It was as if he were offering us something unusual and special...well, I guess he was!

    It's true, all the Germans I meet are really nice! I mean, obviously there are gruff shopkeepers and whatnot, but still.
    Although I think this waiter was Italian...

    It's the same here, really. Asking for tap water is unheard of, and water costs more than beer... but I don't like beer, so am usually stuck with (fizzy, meh) water.
    I even have to order an extra glass of water to go with my espresso and pay for it. :/

    I know, eh. I'm always so impressed (on the rare occasion) when they give you a tiny little glass of water with your espresso for free. Grumble grumble. I guess this just means that I should always carry around a water bottle.
