Oh man, that sounds delicious. (And I'm getting peckish so even more so.) But the batter is actually not difficult to make, so it's totally doable on a hotplate at home, too! It's collecting all the ingredients is the time-consuming part (outside of Japan). Have you tried monjayaki? Also delicious, though slightly resembles barf.
Everytime I read octopus, I think of octopus balls. or okonomiyaki. YUM!
