my grand-mother used to make this dessert a lot, funny I thought it was a south american thing from the 70´s
No way!! Maybe it IS a South American thing that came to Japan...?! I'm going to go look this up!
This looks very interesting! It looks very easy to make. Some recipes call for sugar added to the coffee, and some unsweetened. What is the Japanese style, and what way do you prefer it? I'm off to buy the Knox gelatine now. Let me know! mmm...
That's so cool that you're going to try to make it yourself, BM! And yes, it's really easy -- I used to make it when I lived outside of Japan before but had forgotten about it lately! I'll have to make it when I'm back in Berlin! I just looked up some recipes, and there seem to be sugar and non-sugar variations depending on the person. The amount of sugar seems to vary quite a bit, too. (Ooh, I just saw a recipe where someone adds brandy as well. Fancy!) As for me, I like to eat the jelly with ice cream anyway, so I wouldn't necessarily add sugar to the jelly itself. Some people seem to also like to eat it with whipped cream or sugar-syrup (sugar dissolved in a bit of boiling water in a pan). You could of course just add sugar to the jelly and eat it without the ice cream/whipped cream/syrup! mmm! Writing this just made me crave some more coffee jelly...
COFFEE JELLY ROCKS!!! Why have I not heard of this before? I made it both unsweetened and sweetened and I love them BOTH! (although sweetened gets a bit of a nudge ahead) Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!!
Aww! I'm so glad to hear that! Spreading the coffee jelly love one person at a time! :D YAY!
Omg really? Does it really taste so good? I'm gonna try it with starch. I just don't like gelatine and once I made a suuuper duuper orange jelly with starch. Thanks for the idea.Love from Istanbul :)
Mmmm! Orange jelly sounds tasty as well! Let me know how it works out with starch!
Ohhh the Chinese buffet here does it (next to almond jelly) but they don't sweeten it. With soft-serve ice cream on top sounds...AMAZING.
Ooooh! Chinese buffet! I am totally coming back to Frankfurt for that. GET IN MY BELLY!
