MD

I'd happened to be in Japan right when MiniDisks were the newest, coolest thing ever, and my friends and I used to make each other mix-MDs instead of mixtapes. It died down pretty quickly with CD-RWs and whatnot (and I don't think it was much of a hit in other countries), but it brought back some memories when I found some old MDs and MD players while helping my parents pack for their move.

  1. I still have one of those adapters to allow an MD to operate in a cd player. I got it at a yard sale for free because they didn't use it. I used to to create full size cd's of font and game md's.

    1. Yup! At the end of March! (it's packing/cleaning madness at the moment)

  3. Wow! Must be weird when they are so far away. For me at least it's just a 1.10h plane ride, but even that isn't exactly around the corner. It does give you a pretty good reason to visit Japan again though :)

    1. I know, eh! So ridiculously far. Probably not this year, but I'll try to make it over to the island next year!!

  4. Huh, first of all… I didn't know they were still in production. Secondly, I happened to use MD's for media projects in my high school class (like interviews and other audio recording stuff).

Also, this reminded me that there are probably a few recordings of my old band on a MD in existence. Somewhere among all my old junk that is in storage. Wow.

    1. So I guess the little MD wave made a ripple in Norway too then! Such a strange medium that was only used for like...10 years (if that). So weird!!

    2. Yeah, it did :) And there were definitely a few who used it. But, as far as I know, mostly around year 2000, give or take a few years.

I actually had no idea that MD was released as early as in 1992 (looked it up on Wikipedia). Seems ancient by now...

    3. 1992?! no kidding! I also thought it was a 1998-2000-y thing too!

    4. Yeah, I guess it took some time before it got mainstream and affordable for the non-professional market =)
