The festival we never went to

G finished his exams and no longer needs to study 7 hours a day (for now), so we spent Saturday together just hanging around and relaxing. There were also lots of film festivals going on, one of which we didn't make it to:

G had suggested to me because he thought "it might give me something interesting to blog about." Alas, we didn't go, but it still gave me something (interesting?) to blog about. I sense a beginning of a series. "The Time I Almost Went Skydiving But Didn't." "The Time I Thought About Punching a Dolphin in the Face." "The Day I Tried to Buy Jeans (But Failed)." So on and so forth.

I'll tell you what I did do this weekend, though. We carved pumpkins!

Oooh! Spooky!
"They turned out brain mush into delicious soup."

I'm a day early, but here's a terrible (and the only) Halloween joke I know:

Why couldn't the boy bat get laid?

Because he had a hollow weenie.

Badum'ch.

If you work harder, you'll get it done faster.

I stole my friend K's FB status and turned it into a comic. Not original, I know, but I couldn't not illustrate it. Too cute.

Kettle, Law, and Marketa

Okay, so I did want a toy vacuum cleaner when I was a kid, but still.

Speaking of toys, something I recently seriously considered buying is a plush roast chicken.
SO squee!
Oh, and slightly unrelated (but not entirely unrelated), but I have a friend whose last name is Kettle. Cutest last name ever!

And last but not least: G finished his written state judicial exams today! Yay! Well done, G! Par-tay! We're going out to see the talented Marketa Irglova (of the band The Swell Season from the film Once) in concert tonight! Can't wait!

The Vicious Noodle Cycle

Whoopsa. Sorry for missing Tuesday! Here's one that gets me every time . . . I never learn.

Btw, G and I signed up for another run---this time for a relay marathon in November. Basically it's running the full-length marathon with a team of five people . . . should be fun! We also had to come up with a team name to register, and we decided to go with the faux-German Tom Waits song, "Kommienezuspadt."

Sei pünktlich! Sei pünktlich!

Trusted News Source

I do read the news, but this happens to me as well (and way too often).

Nuts

Yeah, I know this was a play and all, but Germans are very open about nudity in general. G wants to take me to a coed sauna when he's done with this exams, and as much as I'm curious to experience it (at least once), I'm slightly intimidated. Just slightly.

Speaking of nuts, M, Mama, and I drew faces on nuts last night.
Featuring Maki's Chestnut hedgie, my old man Walnut and Chestnutman.
Thanks for a fun visit, M! See you again soon!

Happy 1st Birthday Bonsai!

OMG Bonsai is 1 year old! A lot has happened in the last year, but I'm proud to have been able to stick with this blog for an entire year! Yay!
Yeah yeah, whoop whoop!

And here's a freaky dream I had the other day. Come to think of it, I don't seem to have anything but freaky dreams.

It all made sense in the dream.

X-Mas is Inching Near

Noooooh! Christmas season strikes AGAIN!

Brr, shiver. Why does it start so early in Germany? At least the Halloween hubbub keeps it at bay until November in North America. If you need me, I'll be hiding under my blanket until the first week of January, thanks.

Bedroom Slippers

I did this back when I was living in a dorm in Toronto. Fortunately I was only going to a subway party, but I was pretty shocked at the whole new level of stupid that I'd achieved.

d'oh.

Evening Classes

A nice day with M at Tierpark Berlin (yes, I went back again). Now off to class:

ps. I drew this cartoon in class.

Bread

Wargh! No updates in two days! I've been feeling guilty about it all weekend, so here's an update about something my friend M's mama (German) told me a couple of years ago . . .

I still haven't learned how to slice bread evenly. But it's okay, I'm just going to buy myself a bread slicer. Yup.

Did you 'du' him?

[Context for non-German speakers: 'du' = informal 'you' & 'Sie' = formal 'you']

B said she Sie'd him, C said she used to Sie but has worked her way up to du'ing her in-laws, and I started off du'ing G's parents after checking with G first.

It's also pretty complicated in Japanese (honorific forms and all that, as in other Asian languages), but it's not so easy determining the appropriate uses of "you" in German either. I guess that's part of what makes things interesting, but I just love the flexibility of the English "you."

Grand 10

Ran my first ever 10km race today. My parents, G, and my friend M came to cheer me on, which was a huge support and source of motivation for me. It was fun trying to spot them in the crowd, and the 10km went by really quickly. 52:36. Perfectly satisfied with my result!

And the weather was glo-o-o-o-rious! (photo by G)
Definitely looking forward to my next 10K---aiming for under 50 minutes next time.

Explosive

Explosive what?

Apparently fibers are a no-no if you have e.d.

Butter Knife

Pathetic, I know.

But look how pretty! I'm going to give my bike a proper clean once the new tube is in!

Das Papamobil

Mama just wants to see the Papamobil.

But really. The pope in Berlin is the most ridiculous oxymoron ever.

Slimy

Intensive art weekend is over for now! A productive weekend of . . . drawing snails.

They're also both delicious. Mmm, escargots.

Captain Supermarket

Argh! This was meant to be a September 30 post, but I'm an hour late! Schade. I was at G's parents' house making gyoza with him for G's parents, sister and her boyfriend . . . and they were excellent! We made a batch of vegan gyoza, which also turned out pretty well. Also, I think I have a thing for men in aprons. Hot.

Right. Onto the totally unrelated comic. It was inspired by an article about terrible translations of film titles that I found via the ICoFF Twitter account:

It's almost impossible to look for a foreign film by yourself in a Japanese video store if you don't know the title in Japanese. (Unless it's something like E.T. where the title stays the same.) I learned quickly to look up the Japanese title before going to the store, but if I'd forgotten to, I'd find myself trying to explain the synopsis of the film to the poor employee as he/she tried to guess what film it might be.

Right. Off to bed, and then another weekend of intensive art classes (and for G intensive law classes)!
