... Into shape! (Devo reference, sorry.) I'm sending this to my sister - she is doing visual arts in high school and wants to go to art school after she graduates. I think she will like this!
Nice! It was pretty redundant the way our prof told almost EVERYONE to flip their paintings, but it does help to look at it from a different perspective, ie. with regard to composition and colour. What does she want to specialize (if any) in art school?
I discovered a trick for my comics - inverting black and white on panels using Photoshop! :-p It's a different kind of flip, but a flip nevertheless...
Hey, I'll give that a try next time! Josh also showed me how flipping the image horizontally (as in a mirror) on Photoshop also helps. Or if you're old school you could use mirrors too...
Okay, I'm sold :) I should start to flip drawings. Usually I just look at the mirrored version of a drawing through the paper by holding it up against the light. My friend also said he'd gotten the same advice, and that it was a classic art teacher thing to say :)
haha! YES! I love drawing naked people!!! Haha. Well, all jokes aside, I really do think it's helpful...it might have been the single most helpful exercise I've done. And when you get into it, it's really fun, too!
I heard when you draw upside down it helps you to get the proportions right
ReplyDeleteRight, and there's also the mirror trick..

DeleteHeh, sounds a bit like cheap advice... Was it effective? I suppose these were abstract paintings?
ReplyDeleteI've sent this to a friend of mine who've studied art. I wonder if he's had any similar experiences.
It's cheap but surprisingly helpful! You definitely notice things you didn't before, especially for abstract works and works with colour...

DeleteNice! I guess it IS one of those old art tricks. Holding it up against the light is also a nice one too. So many good ideas!
DeleteI never learn art.... do you...really need to draw naked people? haha
