Your mom probably got this 'knowledge' ;-) (whether directly or indirectly) from a Woody Allen movie (see here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e954Vvnp2hQ). I only learnt this recently from a friend so it's quite funny that you mention it as well.
Since then, I also have to be careful that singing happy birthday twice while washing hands doesn't become compulsive... At least I don't sing it aloud as in the movie.
By the way: I really enjoy your comics. Keep it up! :-)
I am never going to forget that last fact about the birthday song again. Ever. Because the mind selects only the most silly/useless things to remember... =_=
