Broken

This is the longest I've been away from Germany since I moved to Berlin more than three years ago. It also could have been due to the fact that I was caught by surprise, but it's pretty scary how quickly you lose grasp of a language you thought you knew pretty well. When I go back to Berlin, this is probably going to happen to my Japanese (though to a lesser extent) . . . I think I'll need to make some Japanese friends!

  1. Almost the same here. When I go to visit my son in Tennessee, it only takes about two days before I'm speaking with a southern accent, although it only takes a day for it to go away when I come home.

    1. Funny! I also parrot and pick up accents quite quickly. While most things don't stick, the Canadian "eh" has been totally ingrained!

  2. Oh, man, this only happens when I'm really nervous - I totally forget how to speak English. On daily life, however, I forget my mother language (Portuguese) and say things like "O que você acha about her?" (starts in Portuguese and end in English)
Or worse, I start conjugating English verbs with Portuguese grammar rules.

    1. It's hard but also so funny to juggle multiple languages . . . you come up with some really weird combinations, eh!
