Actually, I don't think you were talking about the same person - the one with the beating is Knecht Ruprecht.But a lot people here confuse him with Santa a lot, lol, for whatever reason. I mean, he comes on St. Nicolaus, not on Christmas XD;
yeah, you have to recite a poem to him, and if you get it wrong he beats you. serious pressure!
