Germans and Bread: Part I

I've always wanted to organize my thoughts on Germans and their obsession with their bread. I think this will take a while though...

  1. Geez. We have a look of kinds of bread in Brazil, and I guess we kinda have "standard" ways to cut and eat, but you know, people don't have to strictly follow the rules.
Well, this post made me hungry now :(

    1. What's the standard way to cut your bread? I've actually not confirmed with other Germans if that would be the proper way to share a bun, but G insists that it's correct anyway!

  2. Wow! I feel so out of it when you speak of bread. We don't even have a bakery around here, let alone a "kata" for bread, bread cutting and even bread eating. All I can say is YUM!!

    1. You guys aren't big bread people? Are you more into pasta/potatoes/rice? Bread is actually my least favorite form of carb compared to the others, but German bread is really good! I can understand how the Germans get obsessive about it!

    2. Oh, I ADORE good bread, (haven't you seen my Facebook pics?) but the only way I get "the good stuff" is to visit a town about thirty miles away and go to something like a "Panera". I do enjoy pasta and rice, but I would have to give bread my personal trophy.

  3. The initial mistake in this is that you mixed up bread and buns.. If you want to talk about Brötchen you should capture it correspondingly. A quality bread can by no means be compared to a Brötchen! ;)
(Btw.. while it is true that there is a top-bottom-hierarchy, I don't know anyone who cuts a Brötchen that way in order to avoid it. Seems even less satisfying.)

    1. It's funny how Brot and Brötchen seem to be completely different things in German...whereas in English buns would fall under the category of bread. It's a complicated world of bread....

  4. Ooohhh I never knew about the last fact?! I do know the top is superior, but I prefer the inferior bottom half because it's thinner and easier to put stuff on... and it doesn't topple over on your plate...

    1. I also have a friend who's a fan of the bottom half...so it works out well with her boyfriend!
