  1. Me too! I first thought it was a joke on the fact that students have not enought money to eat anything else than nuts, but I got a hint recently that it would be because nuts and the like help thinking and focusing. The latter explanation might be as wrong as the first one though.

    1. Yeah, I also thought about that too...but looks like P found a pretty convincing argument below! :)

  2. (german) wikipedia has an answer: when the name came up, the ingredients (originally just raisins and almonds) were kind of expensive (and students were from well-off backgrounds), and it was also considered helpful against the effects of alcohol...
kind of strange to have it offered with coffee i guess, but maybe that kind of thing is just what people crave for when they're up in the air (like tomato juice)!

    1. You're a man of answers P! That's a really interesting background story. I also started thinking about the English "trail mix"...I mean, that's kind of weird too, but I guess the "trail" kind of reminds me of camping and nuts are kind of like camping food...right?
But yes. Tomato juice! I don't know why but I love tomato juice on the plane! And konsome (consomme) soup whenever I'm flying JAL!
